Ghostwriter (“Ghostwriter”, “we”, “us”) is a Chrome extension that drafts replies, comments and messages in your own voice on the sites where you write. This policy explains what data the extension and its backend process, why, and the controls you have. We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the service.
Ghostwriter exists for one purpose: to help you write replies on web pages by generating suggested text with an AI model. We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to that single feature.
When — and only when — you trigger an action (the 👻 wand, a tone or length button, or a custom instruction), Ghostwriter reads the text of the field you are writing in and the surrounding conversation on the page, and sends it to an AI model to generate a suggestion. Removing the extension from chrome://extensions deletes all of this local data.
To enforce the free trial and unlock paid access, our backend stores a small amount of data, keyed to an anonymous installation ID:

To understand how Ghostwriter is used, support you, and improve the product, our backend also stores the following, keyed to the same anonymous installation ID (unless you turn sharing off in Settings):

These are first-party analytics: we do not use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in operating and improving the service. You can stop all of this at any time via the Share anonymous usage toggle in the extension's Settings, and you can request deletion of your server-side data (see “Retention & deletion”).
Payments are processed by Stripe. You enter your card details on Stripe's secure checkout — we never see or store your full card number. Stripe processes your payment and billing information under its own privacy policy. We receive from Stripe only what we need to grant access (subscription status, plan, subscription ID, and your checkout email).
Content sent to an AI provider is subject to that provider's terms and privacy policy. We only send the content needed to draft your reply.
Ghostwriter requests access to the pages you write on so the wand can appear in text fields and read the surrounding conversation needed to draft a reply. This access is used solely for the feature described above; the extension only reads page content when you trigger an action.
Local data lives in your browser until you clear it or uninstall the extension. Server-side trial and subscription data is kept while your installation or subscription is active. Usage analytics and generation history are kept to run and improve the product; generation content is kept for a limited period and then purged. To request deletion of your server-side data (for example, the records tied to your installation ID or checkout email), contact us at the address below and we will remove it.
Ghostwriter is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction) and we do not knowingly collect their data.
We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be reflected by the “Last updated” date above.
